UEFA Champions League 2021-2022: Tournament format

The 2021-2022 edition of the UEFA Champions League has a familiar format and a whole new twist.

As usual, the tournament begins with a group stage (eight of the four teams in each team), and the top two finishers in each group advance to the Round of 16, which begins in February 2022. The rest of the rounds are played until the final of the singles match on May 2, 2022.

  • Group stage: September 14-15, September 28-29, October 19-20, November 2-3, November 23-24, December 7-8
  • 16 rounds: February 15-16, March 8-9 / February 22-23, March 15-16
  • Quarter finals: April 5-6, April 12-13
  • Semifinals: April 26-27, May 3-4
  • Final: May 28, 2022 (St. Petersburg, Russia)

No away goal tiebreaker

Here’s the twist: For the first time since 155, no away goal tiebreaker will be used in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League, including the Champions League in June 2021.

After the end of the second leg, the series ends with an equal goal and goes straight to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty-kick shootout.
