Longtime Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Iowa delegates were in attendance. A few of these same people, who had been pressuring him for Trump’s role in the Capitol riots just nine months ago, were now very happy to see him back. It is the worst of politics and the most dangerous for our democracy.
His biggest problem at the rally was not Trump, the politicians went to support him.
“You don’t have to be a historian to recognize the dangers of a political party showing blind allegiance to an individual. These GOP elected officials just a few months ago criticized Trump and his role in the false election claims that led to the January 6 attack. Seeing their presence at his rally this weekend, it looks like they’ve changed their tune now,
Trump’s favor rating among Iowa Republicans is 91 percent.
“But who knows if Trump will be the next litmus test to stay in his best favor? Even Illinois’ longest-serving U.S. senator Grassley thinks Trump’s criticism of non-American attacks on our democracy and instead praising him for an eighth term in the Senate is’ smart ‘politics. “It’s clear that the party is no longer defined by policy ideas, but by full allegiance to Trump and his influence. To put it bluntly, today’s GOP is how democracy dies,” he concluded.
