After losing their leader in Washington, Donald Trump-backed Republicans are seen praising a new authoritarian-curious leader: anti-Hungarian anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT, anti-free press Victor Orbon.
From Fox News’ Tucker Carlson’s Budapest to programming at a Conservative Political Action Conference event in Hungary next week to former Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to a “Demography Summit” last month, American Conservatives have been praising the former Sovereign.
“Nowadays, all roads lead to Victor Urban’s Budapest for the GOP and its American media and political allies.” It’s crazy that the CPAC will remain, ”said Ruth Ben-Giat, a professor of history at New York University who has been warning for years about the authoritarianism of the Republican Party under Trump. “Destroying democracy in the country goes hand in hand with making America a partner in dictatorships abroad.”
Heather Conley, director of the Europe, Russia and Eurasia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the new clear appreciation of Urban’s rule was worrying. “Of course there is a shared agenda between Orbanism and some elements of the Republican Party. Both have contributed to political solidarity and faith and traditional theological values for profit, ”he said. “But the biggest concern is what should happen [the] The anti-democratic nature of urbanism is now becoming more attractive. ”
Proponents of human rights and democracy have condemned around Hungary for occupying Hungary’s independent judiciary, suppressing free media, attacking institutions such as universities, and insulting immigrants and the LGBT community.
Human Rights Watch wrote about Hungary: “The government has made asylum almost impossible, interfered with independent media and academic freedom, and violated the rights of women and LGBT people, including obstructing the implementation of the Istanbul Convention aimed at preventing violence against women. ”
And the think tank Freedom House gives Hungary a “partially free” rating – the only lower-class member of the European Union that shares it with countries including Pakistan and Albania.
The EU, in fact, has punished Hungary for its policies that violate group policy. It is currently delaying billions of euros in aid for economic recovery in an attempt to force Urban to change its policy.
But the concerns of EU and democracy activists have done nothing to dampen U.S. conservative sentiment for Urban.
In August, Carlson, whose top-rated cable show regularly pushes white-nationalist issues about immigration, aired a week-long broadcast from Budapest, including a softball interview with Urban.
In late September, Pence appeared at the fourth biennial “Budapest Demographic Summit”, which created the Orbin as a forum to condemn immigration and instead called on families to have more children to help bring back Hungary’s growing population.
“We see a crisis that has brought us here today, a crisis that strikes the very heart of civilization. The breakdown of the nuclear family is characterized by declining marriage rates, divorces, massive abortions and declining birth rates, ”Pence said in his remarks. He praised Hungary’s strict abortion laws and said he hoped similar laws would soon be available throughout the United States. “It is our hope and prayer that in the coming days, a new conservative majority in the United States Supreme Court will take steps to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”
And the same week, the CPAC of the American Conservative Union, where Ronald Reagan’s call for independence in Eastern Europe was once revered, revealed that it would hold an event in Hungary in March, according to Hungarian news site 24.hu.
ACU Executive Director Dan Snyder was quoted in the article as saying: “Hungary is a great place to host the CPAC. The essence of conservative ideology is to preserve the best old values for everyone, Snyder said, adding that liberals are destroying everything traditional with their ‘weird ideas’.
CPAC officials did not respond to a halfpost question about Hungary.
Al Cardinas, the former chairman of the ACU, said he no longer understood the party’s thinking. “I have no idea,” he said. “It simply came to our notice then. The Hungarian leader is certainly not one to be imitated in terms of values. ”
But Trump and his anti-immigration allies have praised Urban for years. Trump even invited him to the White House in 2019 and told him how much he appreciated him. “We are very proud to be with the Prime Minister of Hungary. And Victor Orbon has done great things in a variety of ways. Highly respected. Respected throughout Europe, ”Trump said.
In his speech at last month’s summit, Orbin lamented one of the late push by right-wing “nationalists” after Trump’s re-election defeat. “In recent years, we have suffered tremendous political losses. “The Tories have left the European Union, President Trump has not been able to hold office, and Prime Minister Netanyahu is now leading the opposition in Israel,” Orbin said. “Anyway, the situation is difficult, Mr. Vice President. We want you to come back as soon as possible. ”
Trump tried to overthrow U.S. democracy after losing his election by 7 million votes. Nevertheless, he remains the de facto leader of the Republican Party, leading the majority of GOP voters in the polls for the 2024 nomination.
Pence, who rejected Trump’s demand that he announce Trump instead of Democrat Joe Biden, the winner of the Jan. congressional certification election, is also thought to be running for the GOP nomination.
Trump responded by refusing to invalidate Pence’s election by attacking Twitter, causing violent crowds of Trump supporters to roam the Capitol halls in search of him, chanting many slogans, “Hang Mike Pence.”
