Toyota Motor on Sunday unveiled its new 2022 Tundra pickup with a bold look, new technology and more power. But what may surprise many truck owners is that the extra power will not come from the V-8 engine.

Instead of just picking up with a V-8 engine, the Japanese carmaker will offer two versions of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, one of which is a hybrid that can produce up to 437 horsepower-56 more than the current V-8. And 583 foot-pound torque, a 45% increase over the 2021 Tundra.

“We’ve taken a new, transformative approach to our truck development and have had to rethink a lot of what we’ve done before,” said Mike Suyers, senior vice president of Toyota’s product development office, in a statement.

Pickup trucks using twin-turbo V-6 engines have proven successful. Ford Motors stunned many with its best-selling F-150 pickup engine in 2011, dubbed the Echo Boost. The engine suffered a surprising blow, and Ford added other EcoBost engines to its truck lineup.

Before all electric pickups hit the market in the coming years, automakers have begun offering a growing number of alternative powertrain options. Ford offers a hybrid F-150 and a standard hybrid in its new small Maverick pickup, while the Ram Trucks offers a lighter hybrid on its 1500.

Stephanie Brinley, chief automotive analyst at IHS Markets, said: “If the engine and propulsion system give you what you need to operate your truck and do what you need to do with that truck. They are taking the option of V-8s.”

Excluding the new engine, the Tundra offers a much more rugged design than the current pickup. Most notably, a large front grille that takes up most of the front of the car. It also has sleek headlights and a boxer design.

Inside, the Tundra has enhanced security and convenience features, including an available 14-inch touchscreen and a new infotainment system.

While Detroit automakers dominate the full-size pickup truck market in the United States, Toyota has had some success, consistently selling more than 100,000 cars each year. This compares to sales of Ford’s F-Series, which includes the F-150 and larger versions, with about 800,000-900,000 pickups in recent years.

“Tundra may do well, but it’s going to be No. 3 [in the market]. They don’t necessarily have the ability to go after the RAM or Chevrolet volume, ”Brinley said.

Toyota has not revealed the fuel economy or price for the 2022 Tundra, which is expected to go on sale later this year. The starting price of the car currently ranges from around $ 34,000 for a base model to $ 50,000 for an off-road TRD PRO. Fuel economy 13 miles per gallon and 17 mpg of highway in the city.

Toyota makes tundra as well as Tacoma midsize pickups at a plant in San Antonio, Texas.
