Tony La Rusa and Dusty Baker have a history. Now they meet again.

From La Rusa 1 through to 2011, he managed to break the season with the White Sox, A and Cardinals without a break. He won six penalties, three championships and a place in the Hall of Fame, then returned to Chicago this season after a 10-year break from the dugout, eager to fit in with a team.

“I had my first conversation with him in the off-season, just when he was hired, I was expecting Tony La Rusa, the manager of the Hall of Fame, to be very strict, very good:‘ I am in charge. That’s what we’re going to do, ’’ says Lucas Giolito, who will start Game 2 on Friday. ”And I was very surprised when, in our first conversation, he told me:‘ I’m coming. This is your son’s team, and I’m going to work every day to earn your respect from the first day of spring training. ‘And he did. ”

White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has always expressed regret over La Rusha’s departure in 1986, when he was fired by general manager Ken Harrelson. The White Sox managed the only team La Rusa that could not win the World Series with him.

“This club has inspired me,” La Rusa said on the field during practice practice before Game 1 in Houston on Thursday after praising the team’s attitude in the international room. “It’s a very enthusiastic bunch. Over the years, we’ve had some clubs that had something like this – a vocal spirit – but it’s always a real bunch, from the minute you walk in the clubhouse to the time you play, after the game. . ”

Like La Rasha, the playoff heir from former manager Rick Renteria, Baker took charge of a strong Astros team before last season. The Astros were coming out of an AL pennant, but they fired manager AJ Hinch after revealing information about illegal sign theft during the 2017 title.

With nothing to do with scandals and a lack of friendliness skills with the players, Baker fits well for a team in crisis that lacks two elite starters: Jarrett Cole, who was under contract with the Yankees, and Justin Verlander, who just started before an elbow injury. He also spent the 2021 season. Frember Valdez and Luis Garcia, among others, have competently taken their place.
