These Marvel baby names are becoming more popular

Marvel Universe doesn’t just dominate the box office. Its superhero characters and stories are also embedded in pop culture as a whole – wedding themes, clothing lines, restaurants and more. While parents give baby name ideas from countless sources, it’s no surprise that Marvel World is now one of them.

The U.S. Social Security Administration tracks the names of children given to five or more girls or boys in a given year. Looking at the agency’s data, the Marvel character has many names, and when you compare the 2020 list with previous years, there is a clear ward upward trend for many of them. While it’s hard to associate Marvel’s influence with the popularity of top-10 names like James and Avar, others find it more likely to be associated with hit films and comic books.

Peter Jason Quill (aka Star-Lord) is the main character in the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”, the first of which premiered in 2014. Since that year, the name Quill has grown in popularity থেকে from four baby boys named Quill to 42 boys in 2014 and five girls in 2020.

Loki, a fan-favorite character from Marvel Cannon, seems to have gained popularity in the baby naming world as well. Although the name was consistently introduced in SSA data in 2001, the films “Thor” and “Avengers” probably increased its number. In 2010 (a year before the release of the first “Thor” film, there were 55 baby boys named Loki, but the number increased to 1 in 2011. In 2020, there were 1,130 newborn boys named Loki – as well as five baby girls.

Tessa Thompson’s character Valkiri first appeared in 2017 in “Thor: Ragnarok”. That year 63 baby girls were named Valkiri, but the following year, the number rose to 75 and by 2020 it was 128.

Nine baby boys were named Bucky in 2020 – a name that has only been on the list a handful of times. But Bucky is also the name of Captain America’s best friend, who appeared in seven Marvel movies, including the 2018 and 2019 “Avengers” movies, so naturally it seems the movies might be a hindrance.

The name Marvel Supervillain Thanos has also grown in popularity in recent years. Thanos 200 never appeared in SSA data until a few years after 2004 and 200 in, but once Marvel Cinematic Universe films began to dominate theaters, the numbers kept growing every year. In 2019, 18 baby boys were named Thanos. (The number dropped to nine in 2020, but the number of babies born in the United States dropped %% last year.)

Some of the more traditional Marvel world namesakes – such as Bruce, Carol and Tony – have dropped to the list in recent years, but the decline in popularity is consistent with the general decline that began before the film. And in the meantime, more subtle choices like the banner and even the Marvel name are emerging.

If you want to add a little Marvel Flair to your child’s name but don’t want to go out of the box too much, you can see the names that the parents are already choosing. We’ve collected the names of the Mar0 Marvel characters displayed in the SSA data, along with the number of newborns named each in 2020.
