WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Commitment to a dose of the Covid-1 vaccine in Southeast Asia is crucial to the credibility of Quad Group countries, which pledged in March, a senior White House official said Wednesday.

The group from Australia, India, Japan and the United States reached one billion Covid-1sh shots across Asia by the end of 2022, home to a massive Covid outbreak after India, the world’s largest vaccine producer, banned exports in April.

Ahead of next week’s Virtual Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and partner countries, Edgard Kagan, senior director for East Asia and Oceania at the White House National Security Council, noted that India first agreed to export 8 million doses in October under the project.

“We hope that the ramp will grow further,” he said at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington.

“We fully realize the importance of following the quad vaccine initiative,” he said. “We recognize that this is really important for the credibility of the quadrant.”

Kagan said production has increased, “and we think we’ll start to see a fairly significant flow of vaccines from that project.”

Kagan said the U.S. approach to the quad, which has shared concerns about China’s growing strength and resilience, is “one of the like-minded countries that express a commitment and willingness to take steps to support priorities in the region.”

He emphasized that Washington did not see it as “Asian NATO” and that it was not intended to compete with ASEAN, and that it was not trying to replicate the institutions that ASEAN had built.

“We are not trying to compete with them. We want to work with them and we want to find ways so that Quad can work with ASEAN as a group,” he said.

Kagan said the United States is interested in working with ASEAN to ensure the resilience of the supply chain in the climate and to address “common challenges on maritime issues” – a clear indication of China’s broad and strong claim to territory in the disputed South China Sea. .

Kagan said that in climate, quads can work with other countries in the region to help them produce clean energy.
