The pirates will sign a one-year, $ 2M deal with LHP Jose Quintana

Robert Murray of Fanside (Twitter link) John Heyman of the MLB Network Adds Quintana’s one-year deal, the Major League Agreement and Jason McKee of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Report That Quintana will earn about $ 2M (both links to Twitter). The signing will be formalized after Quintana physically passes. Quintana is represented by the Wasserman Agency.

Quintana was one of the more durable and generally tough starters in baseball from 2012-19, when Southpao pitched for the White Sox and Cubs. However, a thumb injury and lat inflammation limited Quintana to just 10 innings for the Cubs in 2020, and she spent nearly three weeks on the injury list this past season due to shoulder inflammation. That IL tenure was one of the problems Quintana faced in 2021 after signing a one-year, $ 8 million deal with Angels last winter.

The left-hander had just a 6.75 ERA in 53 1/3 innings at Anaheim and then had a 4.66 ERA in 92/3 innings with the Giants after claiming a waiver at the end of August. It worked on a 6.43 ERA over 63 frames in all, although Quintana’s SIERA (3.94) and xFIP (3.75) were respectable. A 3.78 BABIP could be a standout statistic in that case, as Quintana Angels had little help from a weak defense.

However, bat-ball luck was not the only culprit for Quintana’s numbers. He allowed one ton of tight communication and his 11.8% walking rate was easily the highest of his career. On the other hand, Quintana’s 28.6% strikeout rate was also the highest of his career, and his whip rate was even higher than the league average. Quintana was also a bit more effective as a reliever as a starter last year, as the Angels took him to the bullpen in terms of his rotation struggles. This could signal a new direction for Quintana when she enters her age-33 season, or at least a fallback option for pirates if Quintana is not made as a starter.

Given Pittsburgh’s need to start pitching, the Bucks will probably use Quintana to start the year on their rotation and hopefully he can return to his pre-2020 form as a reliable innings-feeder. The Pirates have little experience in the league in their starting five, and the team certainly wants to avoid a repeat of 2021, when the Bucs had to dig deeper into their depth charts due to lots of injuries and business. . If Quintana pitches well, Pittsburgh can also hang him as a time trade chip.
