# Roommates, Halloween and Valentine’s Day are known as the two funniest days for kids at school, but a school district in Detroit, Michigan feels differently and has taken bold steps to prove its point. East Lansing Public Schools in Michigan has decided to permanently cancel the Halloween and Valentine’s Day celebrations so that some children are not traumatized, the report said.
As YNYpost reports, East Lansing Public Schools in Michigan has made a decision that will likely frustrate many children in an effort to protect others. In a recent announcement, the school district has decided to permanently cancel all activities on Halloween and Valentine’s Day, due to concerns about hurting the feelings of their children whose families do not want them to participate. The decision was based on the concern of all students to be “inclusive” and “fair”. The administrators gave details of the cancellation in a letter to the parents. “Every year, in addition to the fun of Halloween parties and parades, we also have students whose families do not celebrate or feel comfortable with their children’s participation in the Halloween festivities. We have young children who are sometimes overwhelmed and frightened by costumes and others who He comes to school without clothes, ”the letter said.
Similar concerns surround Valentine’s Day, with school administrators saying that some families “do not feel comfortable with the idea of children participating in a Valentine’s Day exchange or a celebration focused on love.” Some students bring Valentine to exchange, others don’t. In our early elementary classrooms, Valentine’s exchange sometimes leads to classroom drama and teasing.
Although Halloween and Valentine’s Day will not be celebrated in the school in the traditional sense, the holidays can be included in the school curriculum, said Assistant Superintendent Glenn Mitcham.
This addition may include lessons like measuring pumpkin to learn about its perimeter.
