DUBAI (Reuters) – A group of American citizens and legal permanent residents relocated from Afghanistan to the United Arab Emirates flew from the Gulf State to the United States on Thursday, the country’s foreign ministry said, adding that they had been temporarily detained for verification.

The Department of Homeland Security denied the right to land in the United States on a charter plane carrying more than 100 residents, organizers of the previous flight said – a number from the ad-hoc network formed to bolster last month’s chaotic eviction campaign from Afghanistan.

But the State Department said Wednesday that more than 100 U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents evacuated from Afghanistan to Abu Dhabi on a charter flight were due to travel to the United States on Thursday.

The State Department said U.S. officials were working to verify the accuracy of the passengers who were evacuated to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

“The processing of those passengers has been completed and they have already departed for the United States on a commercial plane (Etihad),” the UAE Foreign Ministry said in an email to Reuters.

It was not immediately clear if all the passengers were on board.

Brian Stern, founder of the non-profit group Project Dynamo, which chartered the flight, said 28 Afghans working for the U.S. government during the 20-year war in Afghanistan were granted U.S. citizenship, 83 green card holders and six U.S. special immigrant visas. Kam was on an Air flight from Kabul to Abu Dhabi.

President Joe Biden’s administration has said its top priority is the repatriation of Americans and green card holders who failed to leave Afghanistan in a U.S. eviction campaign last month.
