J. Thomas Manger, the new chief of the United States Capital Police, said lawmakers have never risked their lives, noting that officers “cannot be satisfied.”
We have never had the level of threat we see today against members of Congress, ”Manner told the Associated Press. “Obviously, we got a bigger job in terms of protecting our responsibilities, we got a much bigger job than before.”
Officials responded In the first three months of 2021, there were more than 4,100 reports of threats against members of Congress, Manger said. He predicts that by 2021 there will be about 9,000 threats.
Stolen Capitol police have tightened security since the January Capital riots, the day a group of supporters of former President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol on false pretenses that the election had been rigged. The recent “Justice for J6” rally was the first real test of the manager’s tenure since he was sworn in in July. (The rally turned into a bust, with about 100 people in attendance.)
“We were in a position exactly where we could no longer allow January,” the manager told AP. “And I really want to make sure that the men and women in the Capitol Police Department understand that we have the resources we need, the training we need, the tools we need, and the staff we need to make sure they work and do it safely.”
