SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The San Francisco Transportation Authority on Thursday expressed concern over the safety record of Tesla’s (Nasdaq 🙂 improved driver-assist system, as electric car makers prepared a detailed version of a test version of the software that works on city roads and highways.
The San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) also debated the system’s name, “complete self-driving” (FSD), saying it was an advanced driver assistance program, not an autonomous vehicle system.
Tilly Chang, executive director of the SFCTA, said in a statement to Reuters that a human driver should “constantly monitor” the Tesla FSD system.
“We are concerned about the safety record and name of this service as it may be confusing to consumers, and hope DMV, FTC and NHTSA will continue to monitor and analyze this issue to protect consumers and the traveling public.” .
Authorities manage funding for transit and road projects in San Francisco. Several Tesla crashes, which are now under federal investigation, have picked up regulatory verification this year.
On Monday, the state regulator of California said: “Based on the information provided by Tesla DMV, the feature does not make the car an autonomous vehicle under California regulations.”
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has reiterated that it is “reviewing the use of the term ‘fully self-driving’ for the company’s technology.”
Tesla was not immediately available for comment. Last week, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla drivers would be able to request a “beta” version of the “full self-driving (FSD)” software from Friday. Those who have been rated “good driver” by Tesla Insurance Calculator will be able to use the system.
Tesla has sparked controversy by testing incomplete technology and testing 2,000 people on public roads since October.
Musk said there have been no accidents with beta users.
Musk tweeted, “Sometimes the FSD beta system may seem so good that caution is not required, but it is. Also, any beta user who is not very careful will boot.”
The beta provides features that allow vehicles to navigate and change lanes on city streets and enable left and right turns.
Tesla says the FSB beta “can go wrong at the worst of times, so you always have to keep your hands on the wheel.”
