(Reuters) – Rio Tinto (NYSE 🙂 and the Canadian Union Unifor have reached a labor agreement in principle for global mining in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, the company said on Sunday.
The agreement comes in July, after weeks of second rounds of talks between the two sides after the first round of talks on proposed changes to workers’ retirement benefits and unresolved grievances.
Unifor, which represents about workers00 workers at Kitimet’s mineral aluminum smelting plant and power plant in Kemano, began a strike at BC Works in July after the first round of talks failed.
Rio Tinto said in a statement on its website on Sunday that “both sides are satisfied that the proposed agreement will provide a basis for respect in the workplace and a competitive and sustainable future for BC Works.”
However, both sides refrained from disclosing the details of the agreement until UNIFOR presented its proposed agreement to its members and asked for a vote of approval, which is expected to be conducted in the coming days.
