Philadelphia nursing assistant was shot dead by a colleague who was once his friend, officials say

A family mourns the death of a Philadelphia nursing assistant Anna James, 43, husband and father of three, who was shot and killed by a colleague at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on Monday (Oct).

The local station WPVI reported that the suspect, Stacey Hayes, Take a U-Haul truck to the hospital. He walked behind James, who was sitting at a workstation and started shooting. Hayes kept firing even as James tried to escape.

According to CBS Philadelphia, Hayes fled the scene in a truck. Shortly afterwards, police tracked him down in West Philadelphia at about 1:30 p.m.

Hayes, 55, armed with body armor and various weapons, engaged in a gunfight with officers, injuring two of them before police shot him and took him into custody.

According to CBS Philadelphia, Hayes and James knew each other and were friends, the assistant district attorney said. The motive for the shooting was unknown.

James’s father, William James, Told WPVI that his son was “building a good family.”

“(He) took part in sports with his 11-year-old son, took his daughter back to work and had two jobs. He was a good man,” James said.

A GoFundMe page identified James as a child Brianna, 16, Blair, 11, and 1 year old brielle.

“We are devastated. He doesn’t want our kids to go to graduation school, get married or have children, he’s here to show Blair how to be a good man, to show our girls what true love looks like, “the fundraising page said.

It continued: “He was the most loving husband, father, son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. Our family is forever broken.

The fundraising campaign was established to help James’ three children.
