Leon vs Marseille abandoned after Dmitry Payet hit the bottle

In the first minute of the game, Leon was hit by a bottle

Sunday’s League 1 game between Lyon and Marseille was abandoned within five minutes of the game after Dmitry Payet was hit by a bottle thrown from the stand.

The teams were sent to the dressing room by referee Rudy Bouquet, and after a long wait, the Marseille players never returned.

It was officially closed after about two hours of play.

For the second time this season, Payet was hit with a bottle in multiple incidents in French football.

Nice Marseille’s game was abandoned in August when the former West Ham midfielder threw a bottle into the crowd, causing fans to storm the pitch.

Nice was cut two points, one of which was suspended and Payet was banned for one game.

Marseille midfielder Valentin Rগারnigar suffered a cut on his lip when he was hit with a bottle in the opening match of the season in Montpellier.

And the second half of the Northern Derby between RC Lens and Lille in September was delayed by about half an hour after rival fans threw objects at each other. People then ran towards the pitch, asking riot police and stewards to intervene.

Leon’s last incident happened when Payet was about to take a corner and he left the pitch of Groupma Stadium with an ice pack on his head.

An announcement from the stadium shortly after the incident said one person had been arrested and the game would resume, but warned that further problems would lead to an abandonment.

It looked like the game would resume when the Lyon players came to warm up, but the Marseille players never showed up and the match was postponed at about 21:40 GMT.

Leon CEO Jean-Michel Aoulas said the club had sent Payet “our apology” and added “the perpetrator has been immediately reported and caught. This is an isolated act.”

“Our players followed Mr Buchet’s instructions back to the warm-up,” he said. “The referee then changed his mind so they returned to the locker room. They wisely waited for the decision and agreed.”
