Transportation Secretary Pete Batigieg is facing criticism over his decision to take paternity leave, while the country faces major supply-discipline. But the controversy also inspires new discussions about the need for men to retire after the birth of a child, among parents, parenting experts and others.
Batigieg, the 2020 Democratic nominee and former mayor of South Bend, Ind. In early September Tweets“We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Boutigie into our family,” said Batigieg, introducing the couple’s baby twins.
According to a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, Batigig was “offline” from work during the first four weeks of parenting, according to the Politico report. Some critics have accused Carlson of being insensitive and gay. But perhaps the question is being raised about paternity leave and whether its value and importance is being misunderstood by society can be equally noticed.

In recent years, many more companies have offered paid leave for both women and men after childbirth or adoption. To be sure, many women notice that the need for paid maternity leave is still not as widely recognized as it should be. They speak to the fact that such leaves are often mistaken for a newborn’s inclination and a kind of “holiday” rather than an important time for bonding.
“I can’t imagine anyone thinking this holiday,” said Emily M. Dickens, head of staff and head of government affairs at the Society for Human Resource Management.
Dickens jumped on the notion that a top government official like Buttigig couldn’t take some time for a newborn.
“No one is replaceable. Federal employees are talented and trained to step in, ”he said, when such a need arises.
