Ramallah, West Bank (Reuters) – Israeli forces killed at least four Palestinians in an operation in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, the Palestinian health ministry said.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement that Israeli forces had launched an operation against Hamas terrorists who were planning to carry out an upcoming terrorist attack.
He did not mention any casualties and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Israeli officials have long expressed concern that Hamas, which operates in the Gaza Strip, seeks to gain power in the West Bank and challenge its rival, the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA).
The PA health ministry said three Palestinians were killed in the West Bank village of Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem. It said another Palestinian was killed in the village of Burkin, near the Palestinian city of Jenin.
At least four militants have been killed in an operation aimed at capturing Hamas members in various parts of the West Bank, Israel’s main radio station and news website reported.
