Speaker Pelosi and majority leader Schumacher announced an ongoing resolution that would defer the debt limit by December 2022.
Democrats will not allow McConnell to sabotage the country.
In a statement to Politicus USA, Pelosi and Schumer said:
This week, the House of Representatives will pass a law to fund the government by December of this year to avoid an unnecessary government shutdown that would hurt American families and our economic recovery before the Sept. 30 deadline. Both Republicans and Democrats have priorities that they want to see in the regular order approvals process for fiscal year 2020, and the increase in government funding by December will give them a fair amount of time to complete that bilateral, bipartisan process. In addition to avoiding an unnecessary government shutdown, this must-pass law would include a request from the administration to provide emergency funding to help rehabilitate our Afghan deportees to help those devastated by the recent natural disasters.
The Avoidance of Official Shutdown Act will also include a moratorium on re-enactment by December 2022 in order to meet our obligations again and protect the full trust and credit of the United States. We believe that suspending the limit by December 2022 will result in the passage of last winter’s $ 908 billion emergency Covid Relief Act, which Republican Senators Cassidy, Romney, Portman, Collins and others wrote – and more than 40 at last. Voted for Republicans – including Senator McConnell – and signed into law by the previous president.
The American people hope that our Republican colleagues will live up to their responsibilities and fulfill the proud ones that they proudly contributed to the December 2020 ‘808’ Covid package that helped American families and small businesses emerge from the Covid crisis.
Meeting the Limit Limit is about fulfilling the obligations already set by the government, such as the Bilateral Emergency COVID Relief Act since December and the significant payment to Social Security recipients and our seniors. Moreover, as the administration warned last week, a reckless Republican-forced default could plunge the country into recession.
We look forward to passing this important legislation with bilateral support through both chambers and sending it to the President’s desk in the coming weeks.
Senate Democrats are putting pressure on McConnell and Senate GOP.
Republicans never learn. They played this game of chicken during the Obama administration and every time they lost. They were blamed for shutting down the recent government under Trump.
This strategy never works.
McConnell will try to push the country towards default. He can also allow a default until the blockback is too intense, and then Senate Republicans will do the right thing after being forced to pay the price.
Mitch McConnell is walking the path of a textbook to lose a midterm election, and Pelosi and Schumer are going to pay the Senate Republicans who follow him.
