The Department of Homeland Security announced Friday that it would cancel border boundary agreements in the Laredo and Rio Grande Valley sectors on the southern border.
“Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Complies with Border Barriers Plan, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in coordination with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), revoked the remaining Border Patrol Agreement between the US Border Patrols (USBP) in the Laredo sector and all border barriers in Rio. Grande Valley Sector, ”DHS states in a press release.
The release further states that the Border Patrol “will then begin work in accordance with the Environmental Planning and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for pre-planned border barrier system projects located in the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and El Centro sectors.” These measures “will not involve the construction of new border barriers or the acquisition of permanent land.”
The DHS has called on Congress to cancel funding for the existing border wall.

“The administration is urging Congress to repeal continued border wall funding and instead fund smart border security measures such as modernization of border technology and access land ports, which have proven to be more effective in improving border security and protection,” the statement said. “Until and unless Congress cancels those funds, the law requires DHS to use the funds according to their intended purpose, and starting environmental planning activities is part of the department’s plan to do so.”
The news drew a critical response from Republicans, who have repeatedly called on President Biden to address the issue of migrants at the border. On 1 million encounters between border patrols and illegal immigrants this year.
