GUANGZHOU, China – Honor launched the smartphone brand Huawei last year, launching its first overseas smartphone since becoming an independent company, complete with access to Google software and Qualcomm chips.

The 529 Euro ($ 614) Honor 50 will launch in 40 markets around the world and will mark a big step for the former Huawei brand as it seeks to regain market share around the world.

Honor was Huawei’s budget smartphone brand. It was sold to a consortium of buyers in December, which includes funds backed by the Shenzhen Home City government.

Huawei suffered U.S. sanctions in 2019 and 2020 that cut off access to key technologies, including Google’s Android operating system and related apps, as well as critical chips. This has crippled Huawei’s smartphone business.

To save its Honor brand, Huawei sold it. Honor is not currently subject to U.S. sanctions and its latest device runs full Android with the Google app and runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G chip. The back of the Honor 50 has a 4-camera setup and a 6.57-inch display.

While Honor is seen as a budget brand under Huawei, the company wants to go further in the premium segment of the market. The Honor 50 was launched in China earlier this year.

Since the spinoff, Honor has regained some market share in China. In August, Honor’s market share in China stood at 15%, making it the third largest smartphone player in the country – for the first time in a year, according to Counterpoint Research.

Globally, its market share reached 3.7% in August, up from 1.5% in February, but this was mainly due to gains in China.

In the international market, Honor will face off against other Chinese rivals, including Xiaomi, which has been able to take some of Huawei’s lost market share.
