Florida Governor Ron de Santis (R) on Monday protested the pressure of the left to remove explorer Christopher Columbus instead of celebrating the official announcement of the Columbus Day campaign in Florida.
Left-wing politicians and others continue to insult Columbus using current values and change the name of the day to “Indigenous Day.”
The governor’s announcement reads in part:
“Columbus Day commemorates the life and legacy of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, who made Europeans aware of the existence of the New World and whose travels opened the door to the development of European settlements in the Western Hemisphere, eventually establishing the United States.”

How America Remembered Columbus
DeSantis also talked about the recognition of Columbus Day as the first national holiday by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892.
He added that “until very recently” it was a holiday that was “a day of unification for all Americans.”

The Florida governor added that the day had become “political.”
The signed declaration further states,
“Columbus was the lone figure in Western civilization who exemplified courage, risk-taking and heroism in the face of adversity; as a dreamer who saw the potential to explore outside Europe; and as a founding father who would one day become the United States of America. Will remember by name.
DeSantis created a topic for Christopher Columbus to mention the pride of about 17 million Italian-Americans.
Indeed, his declaration acknowledges the contribution of Italian-Americans to American culture, “… a community whose warmth, generosity, patriotism, and love for family have made those traits a larger element of larger American culture and way of life.”
“What we really celebrate is that Columbus’ voyage made America possible … and that’s exactly why holiday critics wanted to attack it. It’s better to celebrate Columbus Day than to say that America was founded.” https://t.co/hO4t80l1hR

Left Trash Columbus
As progressives and leftists actively work to distort long-held American traditions and points of pride, Columbus Day finds itself clearly in their crosshairs.
But this statement was not receiving enough for the Democrats.
Velasquez continued to tweet, “And yet this day is still shared with a genocidal lunatic. We need to take this time to reflect on the brutal history of violence against Indigenous peoples in America and to acknowledge that much remains to be done.”
Representative Magistrate Jeffries (D-NY) shared similar sentiments and spoke to them on Twitter:
“Millions of Indigenous people lost their lives in the genocide against them in America. Today we are taking a break from the recognition of this humane tragedy. And re-recommend to promote the original inhabitants of this land.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) tweeted not to fall behind the two New Democrats in New York:
“At #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I hope people will use this time to reflect and learn about our history. Native Americans were here long before America’s ‘discovery’ and they are essential to our future.”
As usual, anyone, including the public platform, wanted to get their shot at Columbus.
NBA San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich was quoted as saying “many European adventurers have a painful history of injustice and oppression on indigenous peoples and indigenous communities.”
More ridiculous and insulting, however, is Popovich’s statement that Italian-Americans respect Columbus, “we should be proud of Hitler because we are Germans.”
“I’m a little confused about our city and why it reduces Indigenous Day to Columbus Day. Columbus? He started a new-world genocide. That’s what he did.”
Greg Popovich has voiced the San Antonio School District policy.

Joe Biden celebrates Indigenous Day
On Friday, President Joe Biden became the first president to declare Indigenous Day.
He also made a proclamation on the occasion of Columbus Day, but made a point to mention the “destructive” and “violence” that European explorers like Columbus brought to the new world.
Although Columbus Day is a federal holiday, 10 states and 130 cities across the country have begun celebrating Indigenous Day instead of Columbus Day.
Several Republicans supported them for Columbus Day.
Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) simply said, “Columbus Day.”
Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-PA) tweeted, “Today, we are celebrating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America and the dawn of Western civilization in the New World. # ColumbusDay. “
The official Twitter account for House Republicans was also brief and to the point, “It’s called Columbus Day. Give it a go. ”
This is called Columbus Day.
