DETROIT – General Motors expects to begin replacing battery modules in Chevrolet Bolt EVs that were recalled due to fire risk by next month, the company announced Monday.
GM said the time has come after LG Chem, a car manufacturer’s battery supplier, resumed production of battery cells, including an updated production process at Michigan’s plants. Cell production declined last month due to two rare production problems that forced GM to withdraw more than 140,000 EVs due to the risk of spontaneous fires.
GM has confirmed 13 battery fires worldwide. Automaker has identified problems as a torn anode and a folding separator, both of which need to be present in the same battery cell.
The recall is expected to cost the automaker 1. 1.8 billion, with some automakers negotiating a recovery from LG Chem, according to GM.
In addition to sending new battery modules to dealers, GM plans to launch a software diagnostic update for battery monitoring next month.
GM said the diagnostic software would be designed to detect some abnormalities that could indicate a damaged battery in a Bolt EV by monitoring battery performance; To warn customers about any inconsistencies; And prioritizing damaged battery modules for replacement.
