Have you ever Long for a manual typewriter day? We do. We prefer a single use product here, such as a Kindle. It’s an e-reader, and that’s it. You can’t scroll through tick, check work slack, or ping by chat notifications. That’s why we chose Free Right in 2016. It’s a typewriter, but not like a real typewriter, you can take it to a coffee shop and then put your pages in a Google Doc.
So we decided to try Free Right Traveler, which is a little more capable device. Unlike the original Free-Write, this version is attached for easy carrying and comes with an arrow to edit your mistakes. It’s just a place to write anywhere without paying too much attention to editing. And its e-ink is a pleasure to see the screen and does not hurt your eyes.
I dream of writing a novel from a house in a coastal town in New England (I) No. Looking at you, Provincial Town), and I can feel that all the stories are just unfolding inside me. But when it’s actually time to figure everything out on the page, it’s much easier to check Twitter instead. After working all day on my computer, all I want to do is stare at my computer for a few more hours at night. This little traveler actually forced me to put those nasty words on the page. I haven’t finished a book, but by God, I’ve started it!
I mentioned above that Freewrite products are made for writing, not editing. It is better to type yourself and edit later. The older model did this by having no arrows, which was a deliberate design choice to prevent you from rewriting your text or paragraphs, but Traveler has relaxed somewhat since then.
This time, over there Is Arrows, but you need to use the WASD key, plus “new” and shift keys to move the cursor through each character for the backspace. Avoid the shift key if you want to jump into the whole word. It makes it possible, but not easy, and it is purposeful.
The screen size also keeps you writing. While typing on my large computer monitor, I can see many of my previous paragraphs. It’s hard to go back and edit without working. In Traveler, I see only a few lines written at a time. You can’t fix it in your lead when you can’t see it. Travelers won’t check your spelling for you, but you can when you send your draft to a Google Doc.
