PARIS (Reuters) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will hold talks with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on October 5 as the two countries seek to rebuild diplomatic relations in the wake of a lucrative submarine deal. France lost.

Anne-Claire Legendre, a spokeswoman for the French Foreign Ministry, said in a statement.

“As the minister said in New York, it will take time to come out of this crisis and strong action will be needed,” he said.

Diplomatic relations between the United States and France reached a low point last month after Australia canceled a multi-billion-dollar French-designed submarine deal to build at least eight nuclear-powered submarines using US and British technology.

In retaliation, France briefly withdrew its ambassador to the United States, although the ambassador returned to Washington DC.

Philippe Etienne, France’s ambassador to Washington, tweeted a photo of his meeting with Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, on Saturday.

“Important meeting with Jacques Sullivan 46 in implementing the joint statement of our Presidents to support French and EU participation in the Indo-Pacific region, to strengthen the EU’s defense and to develop a common strategic program, including the fight between the United States and the EU.” Tweeted.

President Joe Biden and President Emanuel Macron have also pledged to “deeply consult” on relations between the two countries.

Blinken will visit Paris from Monday to Wednesday and will chair a meeting of ministers from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Blinken will be joined by U.S. Climate Ambassador John Kerry, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tay and other U.S. officials in Paris.
