A retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sergeant was found dead in a freezer on Sunday, police said, adding that his family had not been able to reach him for months.
The Riverside Police Department was called Sunday morning to check the health of a home-year-old woman in a town about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
Cabrera said family members contacted police about the woman, known as Mary Travis, a 27-year-old veteran from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, who had not heard from her for months.
When officers arrived at her home, they spoke to one of her daughters, a year old girl, who was living in the residence. But something was felt, Cabrera said.
“Our officials noticed a lot of inconsistencies in what he was saying,” he said. “Nothing is being added.”
Police searched the home and found a stand-up freezer in the garage. Inside, authorities found Travis’ body. Cabrera said it was not clear how long his body was in the fridge or how he died. An autopsy, which could suggest the cause and method of his death, remains.
He further said that any kind of charge will be taken through autopsy.
The girl was detained and questioned by the Riverside Police Department, but was later released. Cabrera said he was not considered a suspect at the moment but was interested in the case.
“You’ve heard of cases like this, but in my 19 years I haven’t personally seen anyone like that,” Cabrera said. “Whatever the situation, it’s tragic.”
The Riverside Police Department did not officially reveal the woman’s identity but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office confirmed her death and years of service to the department.
Travis worked in the department from 1963 until his retirement in 1990, handling a variety of roles ranging from working with teens, helping with an administrative research unit and ending his career as a homicide unit – the sheriff’s office said he served for 11 years. .
“Our hearts are broken by this news and the entire LASD family mourns his loss,” Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement.
