Facebook will pay up to $ 14.25 million to settle U.S. employment inequality claims

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Facebook (Nasdaq 🙂 will pay ১ 14.25 million to settle a citizen lawsuit filed by the U.S. government alleging that social media companies discriminated against workers and violated other federal hiring rules, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

The two related settlements have been declared by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Labor. The judiciary announced last December that it was filing a lawsuit alleging that Facebook had given priority to hiring temporary workers, including H-1B visas that allow the company to temporarily hire foreign workers in certain occupations. This type of visa is widely used by technology companies.

U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clark, an assistant to the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Department, called the deal with Facebook historic.

Referring to the U.S. Immigration Act, Clarke told reporters in a call, “The Department of Civil Rights represents the largest civil punishment ever received in the five-year history of the anti-discrimination provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

The lawsuit alleges the use of Facebook’s so-called Permanent Labor Certificate, also known as the PERM program.

The U.S. government says Facebook refuses to hire or hire U.S. employees for jobs reserved for temporary visa holders under the PERM program. It also accused Facebook of “potential regulatory recruitment violations.”

Facebook will penalize citizens under a .. 4,755 million settlement, and up to ৫ 9.5 million to eligible victims of what the government says are discriminatory recruitment practices.
