The congressional baseball game was inaugurated in 1909, and the proceeds from the event went to charities in Washington, such as the Washington Literacy Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Philanthropy, and the U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
The game was held as Congress set a target for a vote Thursday on a short-term spending bill to keep the federal government in operation in early December.
