PRAGUE (Reuters) – Czech President Milos Zeman was taken to hospital on Sunday, bringing uncertainty at a crucial time when the president was due to lead political talks on forming a new government after a parliamentary election https://www.reuters.com/world/ Europe / Czech-Vote-Final-Day-Election-PM-Babis-Want-Kling-Power-2021-10-08

A spokesman for Prague’s Central Military Hospital said Zeman, 77, was hospitalized and the hospital’s director would give a briefing at 2pm (1200 GMT).

Reporters saw the president leave the ambulance from Lanny, west of Prague, shortly after Zeman met with Prime Minister Andrzej Babis.

Neither Babis nor Zeman had any comments after the meeting.

Zeman’s spokesman Jiri Ovasek confirmed that the president had been taken to hospital, but did not elaborate.

“Milos Zeman agreed to be admitted to the Central Military Hospital in Prague on the recommendation of his attending physician Professor Miroslav Zavoral,” Ovasek said on Twitter (NYSE :).

“The president was hospitalized on Sunday, October 10.”

The president’s office had earlier said Zeman was ill and had been in hospital for eight days last month. But officials did not provide details of his condition.

The Babis-centric ANO party narrowly lost parliamentary elections – which took place on Friday and Saturday – to the Center-Right Together coalition, and there seems to be no chance of forming a ruling majority.

Together and among them the Liberal Pirates / Mayors Alliance won 108 seats in the 200-seat lower house and said they wanted to form a government.

However, when Babis acknowledged on Saturday that he had won more votes as a coalition, he did not indicate that he would go to the opposition, saying “if the president allows me to do so, I will lead the discussion on forming a cabinet.”

In the Czech Republic, the president consults with party leaders after the election to find an effective majority.

Under the constitution, the president can appoint someone as prime minister and direct the cabinet to be nominated. The new cabinet will have to face a vote of confidence in the lower house within a month of being appointed.

Zeman said before the election that he would appoint the leader of the biggest winning party, not the coalition, to try to form a government.

It will be babysitting, since the ANO has won the most votes of any party.

Babis’ ally Zeman has not commented on his next move since the election results.

According to the constitution, if the office of the president becomes vacant, the power of the president to appoint the prime minister goes to the speaker of the lower house.
