LONDON – Comcast’s European pay TV offer Sky Sky Glass has launched a smart television.

Sky said the product will allow Sky TV to stream Sky TV and other content on the Internet without the need for a set-top box or satellite dish.

This is the biggest hardware announcement since competing with the Philadelphia-based Comcast for 39 39 billion in 2001, competing with Netflix and Amazon.

The TV, announced at an event in London on Thursday, will be available in the UK from 18 October before launching in other European markets next year.

“Sky Glass is an in-sky streaming TV that provides a total integration of hardware, software and content,” Sky Group CEO Dana Strong said in a statement.

The TV that came after the launch of Apple TV and Amazon Fire Dongle comes in five colors and three sizes: small 43 inches, medium 55 inches and large 65 inches.

The smallest option will cost from £ 13 (17.70) per month in the UK, while the medium option will cost an extra মাসে 4 per month and the largest will cost an extra 8 8. They can also be purchased at £ 649, £ 849 and £ 1,049, respectively.

One caveat is that customers will have to pay at least an extra £ 26 a month to access Sky’s content via television.

Other services such as Netflix, Disney +, BBC iPlayer, Peloton and Spotify can also be accessed via TV, Sky said.

Sky Glass, which could be launched as “Hello Sky”, has a 4K Ultra HD screen that shows more than 1 billion colors, the company said.

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said in an interview with Sky News that it was an “aggressive” move, as opposed to a defensive move.

Sky Glass is “all the technology that Comcast and Sky have been working on for more than a decade,” Roberts said.

He added: “All the wires are gone. All the boxes are gone. You can talk to it. It tells you what you want to see. It shows you that. You can change the news from music to exercise to television.”

In 2022, Sky Glass will launch a new 4K smart camera that supports chat, gaming and workouts, Sky said.

“This is the end of the TV set-top box,” Paolo Pescato, a technology, media and telecom analyst at PP FourSite, told CNBC.

He said the prospect of getting a premium Sky experience without satellite dishes would make the service “much more sticky” for families.

It also opens up new revenue opportunities for Sky with higher margins, Pescatore said, adding that there is an opportunity for Sky to launch a “dual and triple play bundle” that includes fast fiber and gigabit connections.

“It’s hard for competitors to compete because of Sky’s dominance on TV and the collective position of the original streaming service,” Pescatore said.

Some consumers have stopped buying TVs with much more software in recent years because the hardware may struggle to keep up with software updates that demand more processing power.

Sky said Sky Glass was created so that it could be syndicated and deployed by other telecom and subscription TV operators.

Foxtel Group, an Australian subscription TV firm, will be the first syndication partner.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent of CNBC, the owner of NBC Universal and Sky.
