Boyce Mall shooting suspect dies, names of 2 victims of Corona

BOYES, Idaho (AP) – A suspect has been killed in a shooting at Boyce Mall that left two dead and four injured, the Boyce Police Department said Tuesday.

The Ada County Corona has identified the suspected gunman as Jacob Bergquist, a 27-year-old Boise man. Coroner Dotty Owens said the cause of BergQuest’s death was still pending, but he died at a hospital Tuesday morning.

Owens identified one of the dead as Joe Acker, a 26-year-old security guard who worked at the mall. Family members said he died trying to stop the gunman.

Size sister Shawna Lee Lanigan wrote on Facebook, “Joe you have always been in love …. you have always had a heart as big as gold.” “You were and are and will always be a hero. I love you at the end of this world and beyond. “

The Boyce Police Department first received a call that a shooting had taken place at Boyce Town Square Mall at about 1:50 a.m. The callers described a white man in a black suit with multiple guns.

In a prepared statement released Tuesday afternoon, the police department said evidence shows the gunman was first contacted by a security guard who was shot dead at the scene. Police said the gunman then fired a few rounds, a glass escalator and a second wounded man who died of his injuries at the hospital.

The Ada County coroner identified the dead man as Roberto Padilla Arguelles, 49, of Rupert, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The shooter then walked through the mall and fired rounds at the floor, injuring a 52-year-old woman and a 23-year-old woman. Another was injured while fleeing from the mall.

About three minutes after the initial report, responding officers saw the suspect fleeing the mall area. According to the police department, they exchanged fire with the suspect outside a busy street side business.

A 68-year-old woman in a car on the street was shot and wounded in the gunfight, police said. A Boyce police officer was also wounded when he was shot through the window of his car. The officer’s hat was hit by a gunshot and a piece of glass hit the officer, the police department said. He was released from the hospital with medical treatment.

Police found 18 spent shell casings inside the mall and investigations found that the shooter had multiple guns and ammunition, the department said.

Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee said Tuesday afternoon that law enforcement officers searched a Boise home and investigators were searching through social media sites and other evidence in an attempt to understand BergQuest’s motives.

“Something to help us understand our inspiration,” Lee said. “We are working with our partners at the local, state and federal levels to interview people who know him,” Lee said. It did. “

Boise was known to police from previous reports of burglary or intrusions, Lee said.

“We have been in touch with him before. We had no reason to arrest him, “he said.

Bergquist never worked at the mall, but was often there and had previously been contacted by security guards for disorderly conduct, Lee said.
