The Biden administration has shifted the focus to targeting immigrants and applying to employers through workplace campaigns.
Biden has ended a terrorist campaign in Trump’s workplace
According to the Department of Homeland Security:
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Myorcas has instructed the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to provide additional assistance. Wage protection, workplace safety, labor rights and other employment laws and standards.
“The Department of Homeland Security has an important role to play in ensuring that our nation’s workplace complies with our laws,” Secretary Mayorkas said. “We will not tolerate unscrupulous employers who exploit unauthorized workers, conduct illegal activities, or impose unsafe working conditions. Employers engaged in illegal activities force us to draw the attention of the enforcement agencies. By adopting a policy that focuses on the most dishonest employers, we will protect workers as well as legitimate American businesses.
According to a memorandum issued by Secretary Mayorcas on 12 October, ICE, CBP and USCIS will develop and update policies to increase the department’s impact on employment and labor standards enforcement. Agencies must develop strategies to prioritize workplace enforcement against dishonest employers and facilitate the participation of vulnerable workers in labor quality investigations through prosecutive prudence.
The memorandum also established the completion of the mass center implementation activities. Under the previous administration, this resource-intensive activity resulted in the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of workers and was used by exploitative employers as a tool to suppress and retaliate against workers’ demands for labor law.
The campaigns have left behind and helped illegal employers
The workplace campaign was a formidable Trump policy that helped law-breaking employers exploit immigrants. The message the Biden administration is sending is that arresting and deporting immigrants who are not otherwise breaking the law will not be a priority.
The campaigns were time-consuming, costly and a waste of DHS resources, nothing more than a terrorist campaign designed to intimidate workers and appeal to Trump’s base.
The money that is being wasted in this campaign should be spent on processing immigration cases. Trump destroyed the entire immigration system, which the Biden administration is rebuilding.
Immigration campaigns only intimidate immigrants and help illegal employers. This is a bad policy, and Biden is doing the right thing by ending it.
