According to reports, authorities have confirmed that the bodies found in the Illinois River on Sept. 4 are Jelani Day.
“Forensic dental identification and DNA testing” confirms the identity of Jelani Day, said Richard Pluch, coroner of LaSalle County.
The cause of death is under investigation and “investigation is ongoing.”
Day’s body was initially found a week after his first disappearance.
As previously reported, Jelani has been missing since August 24. He was last seen in a surveillance video at a store in Bloomington called Beyond / Hello.
According to People, His family reported him missing the next day after many failed attempts to reach him.
Also, police reports say Jelani did not attend class for several days, which also raised concerns about members of the university faculty.
On Aug. 2, Peruvian police officials responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle in a wooded area south of the Illinois Valley YMCA.
The medical student’s mother, Carmen, recently gave an interview and felt that authorities were not doing their best to help find her son. “Jelani was not getting coverage. Jelani has been missing for 24 days, and as I said, there seems to be less effort to find him, ”he said. “I know about the missing girl Gabby, and she’s been missing for two days, and her face has been plastered everywhere, and the FBI is involved, and I don’t understand why Jelani doesn’t get the same coverage.”
Jelani’s family released a statement that read in part, “There are no words to speak clearly about our destruction. We learned this morning from the LaSalle County Coroner that the dead man was found in Peru, IL Saturday, September 4th. Our hearts are broken.
We are saying that the days ahead will be very difficult as you continue to pray for our family. In these 30 days, our first concern was to find Jelani, and now we need to find out #WhatHappenedToJelaniDay.
At the moment there are more questions than answers surrounding Jelani’s disappearance and death and that is where we will focus our energy. At the moment, we don’t know what happened to Jelani and we won’t stop until we do.
This week we learned that new evidence has been found and police are working on a new lead on the disappearance of Jelani. The case has not been closed and the investigation is not over. ”
Please keep his family in your prayers.
