An unknown number of CA school children trapped in Afghanistan, Biden admin is silent

As the United States moves closer to the two-month mark since the catastrophic withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, dozens of American schoolgirls and some family members are stranded in a war-torn country that is now under brutal Taliban control.

On Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reported that about 41 children from the San Juan Unified School District were trapped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan. The children and family members went to Afghanistan for the military on special visas and went on summer vacation.

Who’s still okay?

Initially, school district officials said only a few dozen were still in Afghanistan and eight students were trapped. Then, last week, San Juan Unified School district officials identified 1 student as still in Afghanistan. Of those 411, the district says three have been removed but are still abroad.

Initially it was also thought that only one family remained but attendance records showed that more students were missing and those who remained in Afghanistan were found.

The situation is a little more dire for the students of Kazan Valley Union School District. The number of American student and special immigrant visas (SIVs) can be as high as 1,000.

In early September, the Los Angeles Times reported that 24 students and 16 parents from the district were also detained. Three students are also trapped in the Sacramento City Unified School District.

What is being done to get them out?

There are reports that Republican Darrell Isa (R-CA) is trying to help bring American students, their families and others out of Afghanistan. The Los Angeles Times reports that Isa and district officials are “trying every day to remind the White House, the DHS and the State Department that there are children behind enemy lines and under threat from the Taliban.”

Isa says that while some have been rescued, there is still much work to be done. He said, “Yes, there have been some successes, and we are happy to bring these kids together in school and their parents.”

He continued, “But we also know that there is a lot more work to be done and working through official channels and through foreign and unofficial channels is going to take a lot of work.”

Isa added that he believes that there are probably still “thousands” or “thousands” of American citizens and special visa holders still “waiting for the word” not languz in Afghanistan “or” neighboring countries to come to America. “

Biden administration response

The Biden State Department has spoken out about how hard it is to get Americans trapped out of Afghanistan. Officials say they have “repatriated” about 105 U.S. citizens and 95 legal permanent residents.

The State Department also said.

These are the number of people whose personal exits we have made easy, we are unable to comment on specific cases due to privacy considerations. We are first focusing on U.S. citizens with immediate family members who are ready to leave and have travel documents. We will then focus more closely on subsets of U.S. citizens whose close family members had a problem with documentation, to find ways to help them. ”

President Biden has praised the disaster in Afghanistan, which has resulted in the death of one American soldier as a “remarkable achievement.”

He said the government tried to contact Americans who were eventually trapped 19 times to help them, and said, “If they want to get out, we promise to get them out.”

With Kabul airport under Taliban control, travel from Afghanistan has become almost impossible. But Biden’s point is that if the Americans are trapped in Afghanistan, it is because of their own decisions.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the school districts were working with “congressional representatives,” but did not specify whether the Biden administration was assisting.
