(Reuters) – Firefighters in California took a break from strong winds Wednesday to get the plane high and dump retardant in a speeding wildfire half a mile from former President Ronald Reagan’s farm, officials said.

Andrew Madsen, a spokesman for the Los Padres National Forest, said a team of about 1,500 firefighters has so far successfully brought the Alisal fire under control from Reagan Farm, where organizers such as former U.S. leader Queen Elizabeth and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev were present. Where the fire is concentrated.

“Strong winds are forecast tonight and we’re trying to do as much as possible before then,” Madsen said.

Crew crews are also working to put out the fire Exxon Mobil Facility at Las Flores Canyon (NYSE :). The company said in an emailed statement that it was closely monitoring the fire and that there had been no damage or damage to facilities closed since 2015.

The blaze started about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Santa Barbara in a populated corner of Southern California on Monday, with an increase of 15,500 acres (6,272 hectares) and only 5% under control.

Madsen said firefighters had hoped to take advantage of the lack of high winds, but by evening they had not been able to build a percentage base.

The Alisal fire spread rapidly on Tuesday amid strong winds, shutting down a major highway and commuter train line. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that the state has secured federal funds to compensate 5% of local and state spending related to the fight against the fire.

California is on the brink of suffering more burns this year than last year, the worst fire season on record when a record 4.2 million acres were burned – the size of Hawaii.
