Activists are helping Texans get abortion pills online

Only an Internet connection is required for this procedure: Patients go online and answer some HIPAA-compliant questions about their pregnancy, such as the first day of their last period. If this is a simple fact, it is approved by the doctor – there are seven American doctors covering 15 states – and the medicine arrives within a few days. In places like Texas, where there are no doctors in the state of Aid Access, Rebecca Gamperts, founder of Aid Access, prescribes medicine from Europe, where she is. It could take about three weeks, Pitney said.

The ability to perform a safe, prudent abortion at home with just an Internet connection can change lives for the needs of Texans and others. Alyssa Wells, co-founder of Plan C, said: “It has really changed the face of abortion, providing information and education about accessing pills.

In Texas, the need is particularly acute because the existing history of cultural stigma and restrictive law means very few private clinics are available here. Before the recent law changes, Texans taking abortion drugs were three times higher than the national average, because abortion clinics were so far away.

“In situations like Texas, where mainstream access routes are almost completely blocked, this is a solution,” said Wells, who describes much of Texas as an “abortion desert.” Blacks and Hispanics often have limited access to medical care, and therefore the ability to access online abortion services is vital to this community.

These are much cheaper than medical abortions, most drugs cost from $ 105 to $ 150 and the necessary online advice, depending on which state you live in.

But while they are usually prescribed in other countries (for example they are used in about 90% of abortions in France and Scotland), Americans use only 40% of abortion pills. In fact, the use of ills to “self-manage abortion” in the United States could lead to charges in at least 20 states, including Texas, and has led to 21 arrests since 2000. Write a prescription as a foreign doctor has come under federal investigation by the FDA, which challenged the group. The situation remains unresolved.
